Hi, Steve Sztopek here again.

This poster is from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is my favorite sci-fi flick!

The music you are hearing (be patient... it's coming!) is GORT's theme from the film's score (by Bernard Herrman), featuring that other-worldly musical instrument, the theremin.

This has got to be one of the greatest sci-fi classics of all time. This 1951 black-and-white film was a product of the times: It was made six years after the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The United States was in a cold war with Russia; everyone here in America was anti-commie; and the Korean war was erupting.

The message of the film was, of course, that the citizens of earth had better stop playing around with nuclear weapons ... or GORT (the programmed robot and watchdog of the universe) would “reduce us to a burned-out cinder.”

This flick's message has as much relevance today as it did in 1951. Take away the old cars and the other “period” stuff, and this simplistic film would be just as powerful if remade today following the original screenplay.

If you can't find a copy of this thought-provoking, fascinating (yet fun!) movie in your video store, e-mail me and I will personally help you get a copy!

Thanks for visiting our site.

P.S.  A life-size model of Gort, made from the original mold, stands guard in the entrance of our 1170 S. La Brea location. Come over to our store ... stand in front of 8 foot tall Gort... and utter Gort's secret command:

“Klaatu Barada Nikto”

Won't you be surprised if Gort follows you home!
